Our journey begins in the late 1990s and early 2000s when the land we now call Shakawe was known as Lohan Boerdery. In 2004, Lohan Boerdery underwent a transformation and emerged as the Shakawe Private Game Reserve, a name that echoes its local meaning, "place of big rock."
Nestled between the charming towns of Thabazimbi (45km) and Vaalwater (55km), our haven overlooks the awe-inspiring Kransberg mountain range, a proud member of the majestic Waterberg Mountain range, soaring to heights of 2000 meters above sea level. Notably, the Waterberg region holds the distinction of being the first in northern South Africa to earn the prestigious title of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Covering a sprawling 650,000 hectares with an average elevation of 600 meters, the Waterberg is a testament to nature's grandeur. Here at Shakawe, we sit atop this remarkable landscape, sharing borders with the esteemed Marakele National Park. Our realm boasts a rich tapestry of ecosystems, ranging from expansive open plains and lush bushland to tranquil floodlands.
This diverse habitat provides sanctuary to over 25 distinct animal species and boasts a staggering 300 species of birds, including 11 that are classified as endangered. Among these, the White Back Vulture, also known as the Cape Vulture, finds its cherished home here. The Kransberg, within our sanctuary, serves as a vital breeding ground for these majestic birds and is zealously protected by Marakele National Park.
